Hydrological Budget for the Southern Apennines District

The activity entitled “Development of a Hydrological Budget Model and the Design of a Hydro-Meteorological Monitoring Network for the Southern Apennines District” has been carried out within the framework of the scientific agreement with the Autorità di Bacino Distrettuale dell’Appennino Meridionale and funded by the Development and Cohesion Fund 2014–2020 (PED Acque – CUP F52G16000010001).

The project aims to strengthen water governance across the Southern Apennines District through the implementation of an integrated hydrological budget model and the strategic design of a modern hydro-meteorological monitoring network. The initiative combines distributed hydrological modelling, spatial data integration, and multi-source environmental datasets to support quantitative assessment of water availability, groundwater–surface water interactions, and climate-driven variability.

A core outcome of the activity is the development of a decision-support framework capable of informing basin-scale planning, drought and flood risk management, and compliance with European water directives. By coupling modelling tools with an optimized monitoring infrastructure, the project contributes to enhancing resilience, improving data-driven management practices, and supporting long-term sustainability of water resources in Southern Italy.
