EGU 2027: call for abstracts for session HS10.5 on Soil-Plant-Atmosphere Interactions and Climate Extremes

We are pleased to announce that our session HS10.5 “Soil-Plant-Atmosphere Interactions and Hydrological Pathways Across Climate Extremes” has been accepted at the EGU General Assembly 2027 (Vienna, Austria & Online, 4–9 April 2027). The session is co-organized with the Biogeosciences, Natural Hazards and Soil System Sciences divisions (BG3.37 / NH13.9 / SSS4.17), and abstract submission is now open until 12 January 2027, 13:00 CET.

About the session

Droughts, heatwaves and periods of excess water are becoming more frequent and more intense, and the way ecosystems and catchments respond depends on the coupled behaviour of soil, vegetation and atmosphere. HS10.5 brings together studies, from the field plot to the catchment scale, that explore how these interactions shape hydrological and vegetation responses to climate extremes. We welcome contributions on:

  • the role of antecedent conditions – soil moisture, root-zone storage, vegetation state and groundwater connectivity – in controlling the response to extremes;
  • contrasting responses under dry and wet conditions, drought-to-flood transitions and compound hot–dry events;
  • recovery timing and legacy effects of extreme events on water fluxes and ecosystems;
  • approaches that combine observations and models – satellite and UAS remote sensing, field experiments, process-based modelling, data assimilation and interpretable or hybrid machine learning – to test process understanding and improve prediction.

Solicited speaker

Thanks to the kind invitation of our co-convener Sheng Wang, we are delighted that Prof. Yongqiang Zhang of the Institute of Geographic Sciences and Natural Resources Research (IGSNRR), Chinese Academy of Sciences, is expected to join the session as solicited speaker. Prof. Zhang received the prestigious AGU Joanne Simpson Medal this year (Google Scholar · LinkedIn). Having him on board will be a real highlight of the session.

Key dates

  • 12 January 2027, 13:00 CET – abstract submission deadline
  • 4–9 April 2027 – EGU General Assembly 2027, Vienna (Austria) & Online

Conveners

Ruodan Zhuang (convener, University of Naples Federico II) · Salvatore Manfreda (University of Naples Federico II) · Yijian Zeng · Sheng Wang · Lijie Zhang

Early-career scientists are especially encouraged to submit. Please help us spread the word among colleagues working on ecohydrology, soil moisture, land–atmosphere feedbacks and hydrological extremes. More on our research on this topic: Soil Moisture Monitoring · HydroLAB.
