Applications are now open for our 5-day short course “Remote Sensing for Hydrogeomorphic Modeling: From Techniques to Applications”, part of the 2027 IAHS Academy and promoted by the IAHS MOXXI Working Group. The course will be held at the Eastern Institute of Technology, Ningbo (China), on 11–17 January 2027.

The 2027 IAHS Academy is jointly organized by the International Association of Hydrological Sciences (IAHS), the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), the UNESCO Intergovernmental Hydrological Programme (IHP), the UNESCO World Water Assessment Programme (WWAP), the Eastern Institute of Technology, Ningbo (EIT) and Tsinghua University, Beijing.

Together with Domenico Capolongo (Univ. of Bari), Giuseppe Ciraolo (Univ. of Palermo), Rosa Colacicco and Marco La Salandra (Univ. of Bari), we will guide participants from theory to practice through keynote lectures, hands-on labs and a final group project:

  • 📡 Optical & SAR satellite flood mapping (SNAP, QGIS, machine learning, GFI/GFA-tool)
  • 🚁 Drone-based river monitoring: SfM photogrammetry, DEM of Difference, AI water segmentation (YOLO) and surface velocity (RAFT)
  • 💧 Satellite observation of the water cycle and process-based hydrological modelling with satellite-driven calibration strategies
  • 🤝 A final group project: an end-to-end hydrogeomorphic workflow on real datasets, presented to the faculty panel

The course is designed for PhD students, early-career researchers and practitioners in hydrology, geomorphology, remote sensing and water resources engineering. Basic GIS and programming skills (Python/Matlab) are required.

The registration fee is €650 (€350 for participants from financially disadvantaged countries) and includes accommodation and meals in Ningbo. SYSTA travel awards are available.

📅 Applications are open until 30 September 2026.
